As a rule, I don't really respond well to being woken up at two in the morning by someone banging on my door.

I had my gun out and ready before I had even really thought it through--I was at home, which meant that whoever the hell it was was someone the security system had let through, which meant family.

Of course, that didn't mean it wasn't a problem--for reasons ranging from Mellir drunk off his ass again and belligerent to someone being held hostage--so I kept the gun out and went to see what the hell was going on.

"Kellom?" Fera called, half-asleep, just as I reached the bedroom door.

"Stay there," I told her, then slipped downstairs without waiting for an answer.

I cued up the viewscreen from a discreet distance to see who was there, and--Tana, standing out in the pouring rain, already pounding on the door again. Fuck. What the hell did she want?

Knowing Tana, probably nothing good.

I put the safety back on my gun and went to the door and opened it.

"Oh, good, you're home. I need you."

"At two in the morning?"

"Yeah," she said. "Sorell's gone."

It took a few seconds for that to sink in. "He's--wait, gone? What do you mean, gone?"

"He wasn't in his room when I checked on him like an hour ago." She blinked some of the rain out of her eyes. "I searched the house, too, I'm not stupid, but I couldn't find him. So I came here. I need you to come help me look for him. Come on."

"Wait--wh--I mean--have you called the police?" I asked, stepping aside to let her in. "What did the police tell you?"

She turned and stared at me. "I need you to help look for him, Kellom."

She hadn't called the police. "What the hell, Tana!"

"Are you coming or not?"

"No, I'm calling the police. You should--you should go home, in case he--"

"I'm not going home!" she snapped. "We're going looking for him. Now." She grabbed for my wrist--not the one with the gun; she wasn't stupid, even as worked up as she was--and I sidestepped.

"Tana, think this through, for God's sake! Your son is missing, it's freaking pouring outside, he could be anywhwere, you don't--when was the last time you even saw him?"

"When he went to bed, nine-thirty," she answered. "And I know it's freaking pouring, I was out in it. That's why I need you to come help me look."

"No, we need to call the police."

"Oh, so now it's 'we?'" she said.

Fuck.

"Tana--"

"So, you do understand why I need you."

I counted to five in my head. "I'm calling the police. You should have done that as soon as you realized your son was missing."

"He's your son, too!"

"Kellom?"

Fuck.

I turned, to see Fera halfway down the stairs, watching us, her eyes wide. I could practically see the wheels turning in her head, figuring out who Tana meant, and counting back, and figuring out...

Fuck.

"Fera--"

She turned and ran back up to our room.

"Stay here," I snapped at Tana. "And call the fucking police!"

Without waiting for her to respond, I ran up after my wife.

She was sitting on the edge of the bed, face white, staring down at her rings.

"Fera..." I started, then stopped.

"All these years," she said, "all these years, I never..."

Oh. Right.

We didn't talk much, about having kids. I knew Fera had wanted them, but she'd never pushed for it, never asked to go to a specialist or anything, and I'd always had...

I'd always had more important things to do. And I hadn't really noticed how much it hurt her. There was a lot I had never noticed, where Fera was concerned.

"It wasn't because of...we didn't...it wasn't for that," I said.

She looked up at me, her eyes bright with tears. "No, I didn't think it was. I just...did you ever even...was I ever..."

I swallowed, but I didn't--I knew what she was half-asking, and I didn't...I didn't have a good answer for her. I wanted to, God knew, but I just...especially now, I couldn't...I couldn't tell her what she needed to hear.

She shook her head rapidly and stared up at the ceiling, blinking rapidly. "God, Kellom, your sister? She's your sister!"

"It only happened once," I told her. As if that would help. I sat next to her, tentatively, but didn't reach for her. This wasn't the time to push things. "It was at Mellir's wedding, I was--we were both drunk, I--"

"I don't want to hear it," she interrupted, looking back down at her hands. She took a deep breath, and stood up. "I'm going to go stay with my sister for a few days."

It hit me like a punch to the gut. "Fera..."

"I'll be discreet," she said. "When she asks why."

That was a relief, and I hated myself for feeling it. For once in my life, I wished I could stop thinking about--about my work and my duty and just...

"Okay."

She stopped and stared at me for a minute, then turned and left the room.

A few minutes later, I heard the back door open and close, and a car start up.

"Kellom?"

"Not now, Tana."

She was standing at the bedroom door. Maybe she was crying, too, but I couldn't look at her right then, so I wasn't sure.

"I called the police. Can you...please help me?"

Right. The kid was still missing. And he was a good kid. He was my nephew. Whatever the hell else was exploding in my face right now, we had to find him, and get him home safe.

"Yeah," I said, then took a deep breath and got up. "Yeah, I'll drive you home to meet the cops. Then I'll start looking."

"Okay."

"Okay."

She hesitated a breath, then, "Kellom--"

"Don't," I said, holding up a hand. "Just...don't."

For once, she subsided, and we drove back to her place in silence to wait for the police.

I really enjoy reading this AU. It's still /them/, but it's so different in all these little, subtle ways.

Good girl, Fera. Run like the wind.

Also Tana, I somehow think this won't work out the way you want it to.
