Sorell
Falcon in the Dive--The Scarlet Pimpernel
I wasn't born to walk on water
I wasn't born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn't born
To stoop, to scorn, and knuckle under
940 FY
His hands were shaking, and he couldn't make them stop. Everything had happened so fast…
He shut his eyes tight. His father, mother, all of his brothers...and now he was king and oh gods he wasn't ready but it was too late to back out and he was the only one left.
All I can do is fix it so this can't happen again. Ever.
He took a deep breath, and clenched his hands tight. When today is over, I can do that.
That was all he needed, to keep him steady so he could do this. "I'm ready."
Nida
Poker Face--Lady Gaga
I wanna roll with him a hard pair we will be
A little gambling is fun when you're with me (I love it)
Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun
And baby when it's love if its not rough it isn't fun, fun
953 FY
If I wait much longer, I won't have as much influence over the boys. It'll be harder to change the world. She took a deep breath, and emptied the packet Rema had given her into one of the wineglasses, then turned around, smiling, and crossed the room.
"To Mellir," she said. Their fifth child, and second son, a year old today.
Sorell smiled, and reached for one of the glasses.
…I can't hurt him.
She handed him the wrong one.
"To us," he said.
She nodded, then swallowed the wine and leaned against him, waiting for the pain to start.
Deva
I Go On--Leonard Bernstein
If tomorrow tumbles,
And everything I love is gone,
I will face regret
All my days--and yet,
I will still go on.
991 FY
Deva felt a little odd, visiting her brother's grave. But she felt like she had to do something today, and...well, visiting Kellom felt right.
She scattered a handful of rose petals across the grave, and stared at the headstone. "...I don't hate you," she said abruptly. "You should know that. I don't hate Father, either. Or Tana, or...anyone else who sided with you. Not really."
She closed her eyes. "I even miss you, gods help me." She laughed, a little choking laugh. "I just...I don't know what to do with my life without you to fight against."
Sola
I Enjoy Being a Girl--Flower Drum Song
When someone with eyes that smoulder
Says he loves ev'ry silken curl
That falls on my iv'ry shoulder,
I enjoy being a girl!
995 FY
Sola had long since decided to age gracefully. She had always been the most beautiful of her sisters, and there was no reason that had to change when her hair went silver and she'd been widowed for decades.
And certainly, with the political changes, there were plenty of new men to flirt with. Like the new ambassador from Asendar.
She smiled and rapped him with her fan. "You, sir, forget yourself."
He laughed. "All right, all right. Will you at least dance with me?"
She flicked the fan lightly. "We can arrange that."
Keta
What is Eternal?--Trans-Siberian Orchestra
And here in the night, as I feel the inferno
I stare in the dark, thinking "What is eternal?
The man or the moment? The act or the reason?"
These thoughts fill my head as I contemplate treason.
965 FY
There was a part of Keta that could see where Mother was coming from. She knew some of the anti-fr--anti-mage rhetoric went too far. But...
She'd been going through the archives. She'd read first-hand accounts of life under the Mage-lord, before they were barred from power, before the Free Years began. She just wanted to shove those reports in her mother's face and beg her to explain why mages weren't a threat.
"I won't turn you in. Because the extremists are at least as bad. And I love you. But..." Keta closed her eyes. "But I can't follow you."
Kellom
Gimme the Prize--Queen
Here I am, I'm the master of your destiny,
I am the one the only one, I am the god of kingdom come,
Gimme the prize, just gimme the prize
980 FY
"Find at least three. And make sure one of them is running loose."
"Are you sure about this, Highness?"
Kellom didn't dignify that with an answer. "Keep them away from my wife, I'd rather not have to choose another. But probably someone important will have to die, if we want Father to take real action for once." He thought for a moment. "See if you can set them on Mother."
His friend bowed his head. "All right. I'll see it done."
Mellir
Be Prepared--The Lion King
So prepare for the coup of the century
Be prepared for the murkiest scam
Meticulous planning, tenacity spanning
Decades of denial is simply why I'll
Be king undisputed, respected, saluted
And seen for the wonder I am
989 FY
Mellir tossed a ball against the wall. Kellom clearly hadn’t lived up to his promise--the human citizens were practically rioting, and that was nothing on what the mages were doing. I could’ve told them.
Deva was anxious, Andrell staring at the world like a startled rabbit, and Tana enjoying every minute. If I was in charge, this never would’ve happened.
He caught the ball, and considered. "...There's nothing stopping me," he said out loud. He smiled, dropped the ball, and retrieved a knife from his bedside table. Kellom would be in his room, alone. No time like the present.
Mada
Vocalise--Sergei Rachmaninoff
[Instrumental]
960 FY
Mada tiptoed out before dawn. Mamma had already set the presents out, and now she could try to guess what was inside.
There was a dolly for baby Tana, a game for Mellir, a sword for Kellom, books for Keta and Deva. She spent a long time going over Sola's present but couldn’t figure it out.
Hers was pear-shaped, with a long angled piece sticking out from the top down to middle and a rounded bit at the top. Before she could figure anything else out, she heard movement from her parents’ room and had to flee back to bed.
Nellid
Moonlight Sonata, Mvmt 1--Ludvig van Beethoven
[Instrumental]
956 FY
He'd lived about an hour. Just long enough to name. They told her his heart didn't form right.
But I did everything right! I carried him to term, I...
They told her this kind of thing happened sometimes. It was no one's fault.
But I did everything right...
Sorell came and sat next to her and wrapped his arms around her. She could feel him crying, too.
Tana
Devil Inside--INXS
Here comes the woman with the look in her eye
Raised on leather with flesh on her mind
Words as weapons sharper than knives
Makes you wonder how the other half die
988 FY
Princess Tana resisted the urge to wrap her arms around herself in joy as she listened to her brother speak. Daddy had been weak, a little bit--not that she didn't love Daddy, of course, and miss him terribly--but Kellom was strong. Kellom would keep everyone safe for real.
He was going to kill all the freaks now, and it was so beautiful.
Rela
Trepak from The Nutcracker Suite--Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
[Instrumental]
963 FY
Run run run run run run THUMP.
"Kelkel!"
Kellom, annoyed, looked down at his baby sister. "I'm busy, Rela. Go away."
"Kelkel play!"
He counted to five in his head, then glanced over his desk and grabbed a particularly shiny paperweight. "If I give you this, will you go away?"
Rela frowned, then nodded. "Okay!"
"Here." He pressed it into her hands. "Now go away."
"Byebye Kelkel!" she said, then scampered off.
Run run run run run run THUMP.
Andrell
The Plagues--Prince of Egypt
This was my home
All this pain and devastation
How it tortures me inside
All the innocent who suffer
From your stubbornness and pride...
989 FY
Andrell felt slightly sick as he waited outside the walls, knowing the en--the attackers' sentries would spot him before long.
There had been more resistance than anyone had anticipated to the first round of the purge. Soon there would be almost no one left in the city--killing mages, killing anyone who stood up for them, killing anyone who said anything negative about Kellom’s regime...
"Who are you?"
Andrell looked up. He resisted the urge to close his eyes--the things he saw behind them were worse than the angry Islander. "I’m Crown Prince Andrell. I want to defect."
Postwar
Imagine--John Lennon
You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
992 FY
King Andrell studied the layout of the board before making his move. His bodyguard was hovering close at hand, and there were several others scattered strategically. He no longer tried to remember where all of them were.
Mother was right. And Father was wrong. And I...tried to keep the casualty count as small as I could.
It was just seemed hard for everyone else to grasp that, and there had been over a dozen attempts on his life since the surrender.
"Checkmate."
The room exploded around him.

(out of curiousity, what's going on in Poker Face, exactly? Was she posioning him but changed her mind?)

((Pretty much, yeah. They have two sons who are still young enough to be easily influenced, and if Nida is their primary influence, they'll at least theoretically grow up with her politics, but in the end she decided that murdering her husband was something she's in no way capable of, no matter how much it might benefit the Cause.))
