The air felt heavy. But it was blessedly warm, and soft, and smelled sweet and spicy and welcoming.
Isshiri cracked his eyes open, watching the sunlight filter through a filmy white curtain.
"Welcome back."
He turned towards the voice. "...Riluke?" He must be in the Islands, then. He and Mel had made it.
Thank the gods.
She smiled and set her book down and came over to sit on his bed. "You scared us. And I've been getting a panicked letter from your sister just about every day, begging me for news."
Isshiri flushed a little. "Sorry. I think I got in over my head."
"That's one way of putting it." She smoothed down his hair. "But you're safe now, which is what's important."
"How long have I been here?"
"About three days. You woke up for a while yesterday, but were pretty out of it. I haven't written 'Lani yet, I figured I'd wait 'til you could add something for yourself. You feel up to that?"
He nodded. "Sure." She helped him sit up and brought over a little writing desk.
Lani--
I really am safe. I've missed you, I'll write more later.
--Isshiri
Riluke smiled at him. "I'll go get this sent, but I'll be back soon. Do you need anything, while I'm up?"
He shook his head and sank back again. "No, I'm good. And I'm glad you're here."
She nodded. "I'm glad you are," she replied, then kissed his forehead and slipped out.
